PMUY Beneficiaries
A woman who belongs to a BPL family and does not have LPG connection in her household can avail the benefit of PMUY scheme. However, she must be included in the SECC 2011 list or under the seven identified categories namely People residing in river islands, SC/ST households, Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes, PMAY (Gramin), Forest dwellers, AAY, and Most Backward Classes (MBC).
Eligibility Criteria
In order to avail the benefit of PMUY, you need to meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Should be an Indian citizen
- Should be above 18 years of age
- Should be a woman from a BPL family who doesn’t have LPG connection
- Should not be availing any benefit under other similar schemes
- Beneficiaries should be included in the list of SECC 2011 or BPL households under SC/ST households, PMAY (Gramin), AAY, Most Backward Classes (MBC), forest dwellers, people residing in river islands or Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes.

PMUY Scheme: Latest Event
On 28 May 2018, PM Modi interacted with PMUY beneficiaries through video conferencing. In the meeting between Modi and the beneficiaries, various topics regarding PMUY were discussed. He also spoke about to how the PMUY scheme has benefited the underprivileged, the Dalits and the tribal communities. The PM also talked about how the women of the households have been empowered by this scheme. The scheme also prevents the health hazards normally the members of the household would face when cooking food on firewood instead of LPG.
Modi also informed the beneficiaries about LPG panchayats that are being held across the country. In these LPG panchayats that are held in the most inaccessible rural areas, important information about the PMUY scheme as well as safety tips on how to use LPG are provided to the people. Talking about the benefits of the scheme, Modi said that the women now need less time to cook food than earlier which allows them to spend more time with their family. The PM ended the video conferencing session by saying that PMUY has benefited the lives of people in more than one way.

Budget and Funding for the scheme
This scheme is being implemented by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The budget that has been allotted by the government is currently Rs.2000 crore for the financial year 2016 to 2017. These LPG connections will be provided to over 1.5 crore families living below poverty line.
This scheme will be implemented over a period of three years and a total amount of Rs.8,000 crores has been allotted for it. Money that has been saved due to the ‘Give-it-up’ subsidy campaign will also be used for the same. Eligible households will receive a support of Rs.1,600 and will be in the name of the female head of the entire household. EMI facilities have also been made available.

Free LPG cylinders for Ujjwala beneficiaries to be provided by Gujarat government
Ujjwala scheme beneficiaries are to receive free LPG cylinders every year from the Gujarat government. The state government also announced a reduction in the PNG and CNG prices by 10%. Followed by the reduction, the prices of CNG and PNG are expected to drop by Rs.6 per kg and Rs.5 per cubic meter in Gujarat. Under this scheme, the Gujarat government has already provided LPG connections to about 38 lakh families and is expected to provide two cylinders per year to each of these families. Beneficiaries will receive the LPG subsidy within three days of purchasing the cylinders.

PMUY 2.0 closes in on disbursing 10 million new LPG connections
Under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) 2.0 scheme which was launched on August 10 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi nears 10 million new LPG connections. As per oil ministry officials, Know-your-customer (KYC) approvals for 9.5 million new applications have already been received by the public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). An official has stated that 2.3 million new deposit free LPG connections have been disbursed between August 10 and September 15. Of that, the highest number of connections have been disbursed in Bihar. It needs to be mentioned here that PMUY beneficiaries are getting LPG connections under easier KYC guidelines as the focus is on covering migrants.
Under the scheme, the central government provides assistance of up to Rs.1,600 per beneficiary for providing a new LPG connection. The beneficiary bears the cost of the LPG stove and purchase of the first refill. A loan from the OMCs at zero interest can also be availed by the beneficiaries which will be recovered through the subsidy accrued on purchase of subsequent cylinder refills.

Government to disburse 10 million LPG connections under PMUY scheme in June
Free LPG connections to 10 million beneficiaries will be provided under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The eligibility criteria under this scheme remains unchanged. People looking to avail this benefit must be a resident of India and aged 18 years and above. This benefit is primarily for women who belongs to a family falling in the below poverty line (BPL) category and does not have an LPG connection. The woman must not be availing any other similar benefits from other schemes.
In order to avail this benefit, the person will have to submit documents such as the BPL certificate issued by the municipality chairman or panchayat pradhan, caste certificate, proof of address, ration card, Aadhaar Card, details of Jan Dhan bank account, and one passport size photographs.
The beneficiary can register by collecting the application from the nearest LPG distributor or downloading it online from www.pmuy.gov.in. Once the form is filled, submit it at the LPG distributor office after which it will be processed. If all the details are correct, then an LPG connection will be issued.

Govt extends free cooking gas LPG scheme Ujjwala for 1 crore more beneficiaries
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the Union Budget 2021 announced that 1 crore more beneficiaries will now be able to enjoy the benefits of LPG scheme Ujjwala.
Sitharaman also said that city wide distribution of gas to household and CNG to automobile will be extended to 100 more districts.

More than 10 crore free LPG cylinders delivered
More than 10 crore free cooking gas (LPG) cylinders had been supplied to all poor households under the government’s relief package between the months of April and June.
In order to help overcome the economic impact of the pandemic, the government made an announcement regarding a relief package under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) and this includes cooking gas, free ration, and cash to a few sections. One of the initiatives under the scheme had been to supply three free LPG refills to the 8 crore Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries of the PM Ujjwala Yojana given time till September to avail free LPG cylinders
The government on 6 July announced that the beneficiaries of the PM Ujjwala Scheme who are poor women will have time till the end of September to avail the unclaimed LPG cylinders. A total of 3 free LPG cylinders were given as a relief in the wake of COVID-19.
In March, the government had announced that three LPG cylinders of 14.2kg will be given to the 8 crore beneficiaries of the PM Ujjwala Yojana from April to June. This was to help them cope with economic difficulties during the lockdown period. However, some could not avail the full quota of three cylinders since not all rural or households falling below the poverty line consume one cylinder in one month’s time.
To help the people, the Union Cabinet had announced the extension of the period for availing free cooking gas by three months, until the end of September. Through an official statement by the government, the relaxation will be made available for those beneficiaries who have been credited with the advance for purchasing the cylinder but did not buy a refill for various reasons.

LPG cylinder policy revised by the government
The government has made changes in its policy of free distribution of cooking gas cylinders which was effective from April. According to the new policy, one-third of the price of the cylinder must be paid by the recipients and the rest of the amount will not need to be paid. Moreover, the one-third of the price which is paid will later be reimbursed by the government. This will affect around 80 million families who are recipients of this policy.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the beneficiaries will receive 3 LPG cylinders of 14.2 kg free of cost from April to June 2020. The state-run oil retailers have sent a circular which states that the consumers who have received the payment for April and May, will have to make the payment for the third cylinder on their own.
The OMC also mentioned that they will reimburse the amount after deduction of any outstanding amount once the confirmation of the LPG distribution is reflected on the portal. Around 240 cylinders should have been distributed in 3 months but according to reports and estimates, 42% of the cylinders only have been distributed.
The beneficiaries who have not purchased the LPG cylinders with the advance payment will not be able to do so until 31 March 2021 and only once the first payment is used to buy the cylinder, will the second payment be sent.

11 lakh PG cylinders distributed to Ujjwala beneficiaries in Maharashtra for free
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. along with various other OMCs have provided more than 11 lakh free LPG cylinders in Maharashtra. According to the government, the cylinders were provided to Ujjwala beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana.
With the lockdown that has been in effect because of the coronavirus outbreak, a scheme has been launched under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana in association with the Indian Oil and other OMCs. The scheme comes under the Rs.1.72 lakh crore relief package that was announced by the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on 26 March 2020. According to a note provided by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, a free refill advance of Rs.296 crore has been transferred to PMUY beneficiaries in Maharashtra by OMCs. Out of the Rs.296 crore, Rs.72 crore has been transferred by Indian Oil. In Maharashtra, booking of 13 lakh refills has been done by PMUY beneficiaries in April so far. According to a note, out of the 13 lakh refills, 11 lakh cylinders have been delivered thus far.

Beneficiaries under the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana can receive free LPG cylinders till March 2021
All the beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) will be entitled to receive 3 free LPG cylinders from 1 April 2020 to 30 June 2020 according to a notification issued by the Oil Marketing Companies. According to the Standard Operating Procedure, if a beneficiary under the PMUY does not take a refill in the mentioned period of time, they can utilize this to take refills up to 31 March 2021 and these free refills will not be taken into consideration under the existing load deferment scheme.
Oil Companies have mentioned that the validity of the scheme will be from April to 30 June 2020 and this scheme will be applicable for the 14.2 kg cylinders only. There is a proposition to initiate this process of transferring the Retail Selling Price for the first refill to the linked bank accounts of the PMUY customers by 3 April or 4 April. Once the confirmation from the bank is given on the success of the credit in the bank account of the customer, an SMS will be sent to the customer by the Oil Marketing Companies that they can proceed to book the cylinder.
For the second refill, the existing check on the time gap of 15 days between the first free delivery and the next delivery will be applicable. Only one cylinder can be given in a month.
