PMUY Scheme: Latest Event

On 28 May 2018, PM Modi interacted with PMUY beneficiaries through video conferencing. In the meeting between Modi and the beneficiaries, various topics regarding PMUY were discussed. He also spoke about to how the PMUY scheme has benefited the underprivileged, the Dalits and the tribal communities. The PM also talked about how the women of the households have been empowered by this scheme. The scheme also prevents the health hazards normally the members of the household would face when cooking food on firewood instead of LPG.

Modi also informed the beneficiaries about LPG panchayats that are being held across the country. In these LPG panchayats that are held in the most inaccessible rural areas, important information about the PMUY scheme as well as safety tips on how to use LPG are provided to the people. Talking about the benefits of the scheme, Modi said that the women now need less time to cook food than earlier which allows them to spend more time with their family. The PM ended the video conferencing session by saying that PMUY has benefited the lives of people in more than one way.

Beneficiaries of the PM Ujjwala Yojana given time till September to avail free LPG cylinders

The government on 6 July announced that the beneficiaries of the PM Ujjwala Scheme who are poor women will have time till the end of September to avail the unclaimed LPG cylinders. A total of 3 free LPG cylinders were given as a relief in the wake of COVID-19.

In March, the government had announced that three LPG cylinders of 14.2kg will be given to the 8 crore beneficiaries of the PM Ujjwala Yojana from April to June. This was to help them cope with economic difficulties during the lockdown period. However, some could not avail the full quota of three cylinders since not all rural or households falling below the poverty line consume one cylinder in one month’s time.

To help the people, the Union Cabinet had announced the extension of the period for availing free cooking gas by three months, until the end of September. Through an official statement by the government, the relaxation will be made available for those beneficiaries who have been credited with the advance for purchasing the cylinder but did not buy a refill for various reasons.

The government has made changes in its policy of free distribution of cooking gas cylinders which was effective from April. According to the new policy, one-third of the price of the cylinder must be paid by the recipients and the rest of the amount will not need to be paid. Moreover, the one-third of the price which is paid will later be reimbursed by the government. This will affect around 80 million families who are recipients of this policy.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the beneficiaries will receive 3 LPG cylinders of 14.2 kg free of cost from April to June 2020. The state-run oil retailers have sent a circular which states that the consumers who have received the payment for April and May, will have to make the payment for the third cylinder on their own.

The OMC also mentioned that they will reimburse the amount after deduction of any outstanding amount once the confirmation of the LPG distribution is reflected on the portal. Around 240 cylinders should have been distributed in 3 months but according to reports and estimates, 42% of the cylinders only have been distributed.

The beneficiaries who have not purchased the LPG cylinders with the advance payment will not be able to do so until 31 March 2021 and only once the first payment is used to buy the cylinder, will the second payment be sent.
